“A riot is the language of the unheard.”

I am not a fan of posting my feelings or views on social media, simply because I joined these platforms to connect with my family and friends who became refugees all over the world after we all immigrated. Also, who cares what I think or what my views are?! I view social media something fun and light to make every day life easier and to connect with those who I miss.

However, in light of everything that has happened I am sad, upset, angry but unfortunately I am not shocked. I have been through and witnessed many different riots, looting, wars.. I have seen and experienced injustice because of my first name, last name, my dad’s nationality, my mom’s nationality, my mom’s/dad’s religion ethnicity, or lack there of, my haircut, my gender, my accent, my broken English or Slovene, my refugee status, my brother’s wheelchair sign on our car, and let me tell you, it’s scary!

It makes you feel small, irrelevant, puny, ugly, inane and most of all it makes you grow up over night. You quickly see right through Santa Claus, tooth fairies and realize how small and insignificant you are in the world.

Despite all that, coming to America has brought me peace. I was able to finally call a place home. And feel it in my heart. Seeing my brother, my one and only forever idol, rising above stars, my parents happy and successful, meeting the love of my life and bringing two beautiful girls into this world, I couldn’t ask for anything more. But, I promised myself I will not let my girls grow up overnight. I will be Santa, fairies and everything else for as long as live.

Unfortunately they learned about social media and I realized it is not something so fun and light. It’s a teaching tool now for many. For the good or bad, and it’s being used as such, which can infect people in different ways, mainly negatively. People rely on it too much! There’s no more reading, research, educating ourselves, it’s FB says so. So I opted out to educating my girls, talking to them what is going on, where I came from, teaching them to be proud and vocal about any type of injustice they witness.

All that begs the question - Can we not use the amazing tools we have for the good?! Being informed and knowledgeable is the most important weapon you can have, but how you use it, is what makes it powerful.

I disagree with any type of violence and/or destruction, and seeing this makes me fear that it looks all too familiar. The truth is-this is our reality! Hiding from it does no good. Speaking against it, helps, but doesn’t change anything. Violence has never brought justice to anyone! , I am convinced that the system we have works, if used as intended. Vote!! Bring changes to the table where and when it matters.

My heart aches for what is happening and I hear you!
