YAGP - Youth America Grand Prix 2/2

Updated: Mar 7, 2018

Everything was going according to plan. Mia was also moved up 2 levels at Ballet West so we were all excited to talk about their plans for her YAGP.

Just when we thought we had it all figured out, there were about 3 weeks left of the summer, and a ballet school that I always wanted to take Mia and Stasha to, just moved to our neighborhood. I noticed they offered weekly summer classes, so I thought it would be a great way to see how their school is. Especially since Mia did not want to waste any time getting strong to compete.

Before all this, we found out that the Ballet West Principal was moving back East due to personal reasons, so we were trying to find out what all this meant for us and Mia's possibility of representing Ballet West in YAGP.

New Ballet Studio

Mia came home after her class at the new ballet studio, bringing a note and saying that she was approached by someone and they gave her the note with her phone number. Who is this person? I thought it was some little dancer's mom wanting a play date or a birthday invitation, but Mia said: 'she said that she thinks I look like I love dancing and she would love to work with me, so if you want you can call her'. I googled her name and noticed she does not have any social media accounts, but did see that she used to work at the University as well as training with many successful ballerinas. It took a couple of days for me to process all this and finally I called her. To this day I believe that was the best thing that happened to Mia - meeting her amazing coach.

They clicked right away, and unlike many other coaches, she was committed, full of hope and believed Mia has what it takes to compete. Mia was so excited as she got to do a duet with her BFF and they both got to start on pointe at this new studio. The owner of the studio and their teacher said that they are both beyond ready. It all started to make sense, as there was a great program specifically for aspiring ballerinas wanting to compete.

I was worried as I already registered both girls at Ballet West and paid for the first month tuition. I kept thinking smaller studios are not as good, how can they succeed, but I wanted to make sure we get to work with Mia's new coach no matter what school we go to. Mia was adamant about not wanting to go back to Ballet West but instead wanting to take classes at the new studio where she can start pointe work and taking classes with the teacher she loved in addition to working with her new favorite coach. Yet again, she made my decision easier - I think.

We never went back.
