Why go see a ballet?
Over 100M people have seen The Avengers End Game on the opening night, and less than 2M people in the US go to see a ballet each year. One of the reasons could be culture vs. pop culture. Pop culture being a mass production for mass consumption vs. culture being a level of sophistication in the arts. Regardless, everyone needs to go see a ballet!
I fell in love with ballet as an art form, and became a ballet goer through my daughters, Mia and Stasha. Mia is 12 and Stasha is 9. They have been doing ballet for about 4 years now. Their love for it is infectious. Every dinner conversation at my house involves some type of a French ballet term, or a history lesson on how ballet evolved from 15th century Italian Renaissance court dance, to a world wide theater performance. Their hard work is intriguing as well as their knowledge. They teach me something new every day. I love to hear stories of famous ballets and try to understand why Giselle is one of the hardest choreographies, or how the 38 fouettés is the culmination of Swan Lake, how every little girl’s dream is to be Clara in the Nutcracker, how Rubies is the fastest dance and the most fun in Jewels...
Ballet is an art form that involves the most beautiful music, unique costumes, dancers dancing on pointe shoes (or as my husband would call them tippy toe shoes) ... All this made me want to become a part of it and be able to share this love for ballet with my daughters and learn how to speak this ballet language. That is why I decided to join in on the experience and started attending every ballet performance that the local @balletwest1 company put out.
It is true, ballet does not have explosions, special effects, digitization or Hollywood effects, but it does have a special affect on the audience. As the curtain raises, lights are dimmed and the live orchestra begins, you are transported to a different world. You are watching an inspiring choreography evolve in front of your eyes with dancers live on stage. An art form that is relevant in today’s society as it is happening if front of you, in that moment. These are some of the reasons, you should go see a ballet.
